PARTIES
Since around 1991, my friends and I have had many parties featuring burning effigies. The effigies were usually made of cardboard that was painted and cut out around the shape. That was then put on a stick and set ablaze. Once a crowd formed at the parties we'd ceremoniously set them on fire, sometimes accompanied by music. If there were several effigies we'd have a schedule and burn one every hour until around 4 a.m. or whenever the cops came.
The themes ranged from politics to dead pets to Halloween to tourists. One party in 1994 celebrated the 25th anniversary of the moon landing. (Any theme will do.) For that we made several huge effigies that had space themes. Some were 14 feet high. There have been several parties celebrating the end of tourist season. That's when I lived on an island near Sarasota. We burned effigies of tourists. One party theme was worms and we burned big worm effigies. (No one knows why.)
I have hours of video of burning effigies and hundreds of photos but none of it is scanned in for the website. I found a few photos and I'll add more as I get them scanned. And my friend Pam Marwede sent me some to put on this page. Pam has made some great effigies over the years and has been my biggest effigy party collaborator.
